If you’re a fan of donburi rice bowls, this Steak Donburi is a must-try! This recipe brings a delicious twist with a rich, flavorful garlic butter soy sauce, made even more special by using Gunma’s Tamago Kake Shoyu. This high-quality soy sauce from Gunma, Japan, is traditionally used with raw eggs over rice, but here it adds depth and an authentic Japanese flavor to the sauce. Serve this tender, juicy steak over warm rice with a drizzle of the garlic butter soy sauce for a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients (Serves 1)
-
For the Bowl:
- Beef steak (10 oz, your preferred cut: filet mignon, lean beef, sirloin)
- 2 tbsp green onions, chopped
- 1-2 cups of cooked rice
- 1 tsp oil (for cooking the steak)
- 2 tbsp butter (20g)
-
For the Sauce:
- Gunma’s Tamago Kake Shoyu – 4 tbsp
- Sake – 2 tbsp
- Mirin – 2 tbsp
- Grated garlic – 1 clove
Instructions
-
Prepare the Rice: Make sure to cook the rice before starting the steak to have everything ready.
-
Cook the Steak:
- Heat 1 tsp of oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once the pan is hot, add the steak.
- Brown one side of the steak, then flip to brown the other side. Cook to your preferred doneness.
-
Make the Sauce:
- When the steak is cooked, briefly turn off the heat and add the sauce ingredients to the pan (Tamago Kake Shoyu, sake, mirin, grated garlic).
- Turn the heat back to medium-low and let the sauce simmer. Flip the steak in the sauce to coat it, and let the sauce thicken slightly before removing the steak from the pan.
-
Prepare the Garlic Butter Soy Sauce:
- In the same pan, add 2 tbsp of butter to the remaining sauce. Melt the butter over low heat, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly. This completes the garlic butter soy sauce.
- Note: If the sauce has thickened too much before adding the butter, add a splash of water or sake to adjust the consistency.
To Serve:
- Place the cooked rice in a bowl and pour a little of the sauce over it.
- Slice the steak into bite-sized pieces and arrange it on top of the rice.
- Garnish with chopped green onions, then drizzle additional garlic butter soy sauce over the steak.
